We recommend flying into
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

For some folks (depending on where you’re traveling from),
Paine Field Airport north of Seattle may be a better option and will place you closer to Whidbey Island.

From there, likely the easiest way to travel is renting a car.

It is a 2 hour drive to Coupeville from Sea-Tac Airport and a 1.5 hour drive from Paine Field Airport (without factoring in traffic). There are two route options:
Route 1 via the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry
Route 2 over the Deception Pass Bridge

There is also a shuttle that runs from Sea-Tac Airport to Coupeville. The shuttle takes about 2.5 hours. More information can be found here: https://www.seatacshuttle.com/

Please note that Uber and Lyft services on the island are infrequent and unreliable.

Route 1 via the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry

This is a 20-minute car and passenger ferry that leaves from Mukilteo and takes you to Clinton on the south end of Whidbey Island. The ferry is loaded on a first-come, first-served basis (reservations cannot be made in advance). It is recommended to arrive 1-2 hours before the scheduled departure time to secure a spot. The ferry line can get long and there can be delays, especially on summer Friday afternoons. If you doubt that you’ll be able to catch a ferry, drive around over the Deception Pass Bridge. Information about the ferry can be found at the WSDOT website

Charming detours as you drive north from Clinton to Coupeville:

  • Bailey’s Corner Store - where Sam and Kaitlin shared a burger before going to Captain Whidbey for the first time

  • Pickle’s Deli - sandwich shop

  • Mukilteo Coffee Roasters - coffee shop

  • Flower House Cafe - cozy garden cafe with coffee, pastries, breakfast, and lunch

  • Langley - charming small town with shops and cafes

  • Greenbank Pantry & Deli - excellent sandwiches, salads, drinks, snacks (consider calling ahead to order)

Route 2 via Deception Pass Bridge

Avoid the ferry and drive through Deception Pass State Park and over the famous Deception Pass Bridge. Keep an eye out for whales as you drive! This route provides incredible views, and we recommend taking the time to experience Deception Pass at least once during your journey! Note that on Fridays between 2:30-6:30 PM there can be traffic delays on I-5 northbound, so give yourself some buffer time in your commute if traveling during these hours.

Charming detours as you drive south from Deception Pass to Coupeville:

  • The Shrimp Shack - seafood shack right before driving across the Deception Pass Bridge

  • Deception Pass State Park - famous bridge, whale watching, beaches, tide pools, lakes, hiking

  • Jumbo Burrito
